AVFL RULES
ALL MEMBERS ARE RESPONSIBLE TO READ & UNDERSTAND THE FOLLOWING RULES, IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND, THAN YOU MUST POST YOUR QUESTIONS IN THE GENERAL BOARD. IF YOU PLAY A SINGLE GAME IN THE VNFL IT IS EXPECTED THAT YOU HAVE READ & UNDERSTOOD THE RULES BEFORE DOING SO. YOU WILL BE HEALD ACCOUNTABLE WHETHER YOU SAY YOU READ THEM OR NOT, IT WILL BE TOLD TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE LEAGUE THEY MUST READ THE RULES BEFORE THEY PLAY ANY GAMES.
THESE RULES ARE IN PLACE TO MAKE THE GAME AS REALISTIC & SIM AS POSSIBLE. YOU MUST FOLLOW THESE RULES AT ALL TIMES
if you do not agree with a rule, or have a better idea on how a rule should work, want a change, or want a new rule in place you must post your thoughts in the general board, from there a commish can consider & make a change, or they can bring it to the board of governors to discuss, or vote on.
ANY PROBLEMS WITH FELLOW OWNERS MUST GO THROUGH A COMMISH
If you have any issues with your fellow owners yo must bring them to a commissioner of the league. They will oversee all problems and make sure they are sorted out, or kept track of in a fair fashion. If something is of large disagreement between 2 people, it is the commish's choice to make the final decision or have it voted upon by the board of governors.
If you have an issue the commissioners contact information is listed in the owners list, you can also private message them on the forum
RESPECT RULE
Virtual Leagues are all about respect, and this is in ALL aspects of our leagues, in game, in chat, in forums, on AIM, I want respect shown to all fellow owners of this league at all times. Examples of disrespect would be:
- Once your up by 32 points or more at any point in the 2nd half you must run the ball with a backup RB 75ovr or less. And you are not allowed to score any more TD's (you must kick a FG or punt the ball). And in the 4th quarter you must run the play clock out to the final 2 seconds.
- name calling
- making public accusations on things, instead of taking proper measurements, and speaking with a commish, and having it dealt with privately with the commish.
- Do not speak in caps, or try to "shout" over someone in chat or on the forums. Everyones opinion & posts are valid & equal, theres no reason for immature non-sense like this you will always get your turn in this league to say your piece

4th Down
Anywhere from your opponent’s 30-39 yard line is acceptable. 4th and one or less from your OWN 40 to your opponents goal line is acceptable. 4th down from the 5 and inside is acceptable. A 4th down hailmary at the end of the half is also acceptable. If you are leading by more than 14 points you must kick or punt the ball.
- When you are losing, it is understandable going for it (down 7+ with less than 3 min's to go in game, down 14+ anytime in 4th quarter if you feel you should go for it, down 21+ at anytime if you feel you should go for it)
- This rule is not to be abused, you should know given the situation if your team would go for it in that given situation in real life; we will of course take complaints on this issue, more than 1 complaint & your clearly not playing sim, so MAKE SURE your not just going for it all the time, be realistic!
Blitzing
- Blitzing more than 50% of the time is too much, remember this is a sim league, and you want to keep it realistic, do not blitz too much, you gotta mix up your plays & just because a player struggles to pass against a blitz doesn't mean you should take advantage of it, its being un-sim and not making the game fun for your opponent at all
- Unabated to the QB is not allowed by user controlled players, meaning as a defensive player you should never be able to run straight into the backfield UNTOUCHED off the snap to sack the QB, when this happens the AI is flawed. Its ok to happen once by mistake, but not twice, the next time you see it happen just turn or dive away & don't take the sack.
Defensive Formations
You should never have any more than 1 extra CB than there are WR's on defense [meaning if there are 2 WR's there shouldn't be more than 3 CB's on that play] unless the offense is in a sure passing down (ex: 3rd & 10 or late in game when your opponent is forced to pass to get back into the game. In these situations and others like them it is ok to outnumber the WR's by more than 1 CB because the offense is forced to pass)
Depth Chart / Position Changes
- After bringing this issue to the BOG during the offseason, a punter is now allowed to be used as KOS. So feel free to punter your punter in on kickoffs.
You are ONLY aloud to make the following changes without asking:
- Guards are allowed to play Center (but not tackles because they mostly dont in the NFL they are too tall to play that position)
- DE change to DT or DT to DE is allowed no matter who the player is.
- LOLB/ROLB to LE/RE (if your player has played this position in the past in the NFL, than we'll allow the change here)
- LOLB/ROLB/MLB
- FS/SS
- TE can play WR.
- HB can only play in the #4 WR spot (unless approved to play a higher position through the submit trades section)
~ If you would like to make any other changes not listed here you may submit this change for review in our Submit Trades section
Disconnected / frozen game
When a disconnect happens the game gives you the option to continue vs the computer or quit & don't count this game. Allot of times it will say your opponent has quit the game, but if the game was not paused at the time of the disconnect than your opponent DEFINITELY didn't quit, its a glitch in the game. Otherwise if you were up big & you think your opponent intentionally disconnected or actually lost connection but had no chance of coming back from behind that many points you should continue & count game so that it doesn't have to be played again or simmed. However, if the game dc's in other situations, please click continue game & write down the main stats for both teams in case they're needed, than please try & do the following:
- The 2 owners are to meet up on AIM, THEY CAN FIRST COME TO ANY AGREEMENT THAT THE 2 AGREE ON, IF THEY CANNOT AGREE ON SOMETHING THAN THEY MUST: go over the stats that had occurred in their game before the disconnect. They will than start the game again & try to replicate everything that had happened. They must replicate the score, and play to the point of which the disconnect happened, than continue on in the game from the point they were at when the disconnect happened.
Finish your games
You must at all cost finish your games. Your opponent could be the biggest cheater/cheeser you've ever faced, the lag could be so unbearable that you can barely control your players. UNLESS THE GAME IS STILL IN FIRST HALF , TIED, AND YOUR OPPONENT AGREES TO REPLAY ANOTHER TIME than you MUST finish out your game. After the game you can report all the issues you had to a commish, but you gotta finish out all games, no acceptions.
Goal Line Offense & Defense
You are only aloud to go into goal line offense/defense when:
- your on 3rd or 4th & inches
- your on your in the redzones 4 yardline or less
Injuries
If an injury occurs it must be posted in the INJURIES & SUSPENSIONS thread on our general board. This way everyone will be able to see & keep track of the injuries. When it happens you'll need to write down the game it happened in & the length of time. [this is only for long term injuries, 1 game or more].
SO NEW VNFL Rule involving Injuries- If a Player is lost for the game, or for the remainder of the season, and the game disconnects you have 2 options on the restart.
Option A- If there is no dispute among the 2 owners that Player A was lost for the season, it must be brought to the forums by both owners agreeing upon the injury, and the new game can either be restarted from the begining of the game and that player is allowed to play till the exact time he got hurt, or you can restart the game from exactly what was left in the first game and that player is not allowed to participate at all.
Option B- IF there is a dispute among the owners on how long the severity of the injury is, IF team A has the injury then gets disconnected, team B must provide proof of the injury (should easily be done when other player quits 99% of time madden asks if you want to continue playing, say yes, go to injuries and take a picture of the injured list proving length of the injury, then quit the game)
IF a PLAYER is LOST for the season in a disconnected game and either Option A or B occur, that injured player is no longer allowed to play the rest of the season..if it is only for the rest of the game, then Follow as Option A stated
Manual Player Movement (pre-snap)
- As a safety you are not allowed to move down past an OLB
- As a linebacker your not aloud to move past any of the other linebackers from side to side, not aloud to go back further than the safeties, and not allowed to press the line any further than game will allow through defensive shifts/adjustments. Any other movement is allowed (within reason, we must obviously stay SIM & realistic without causing any AI flaws)
- CB are not allowed to be manually moved pre-snap, they can only be moved by defensive shifts/adjustments done through the audible menu.
- DE/DT are allowed to be manually shifted up to 2 shifts left or right. If you make a shift you must stay in control of the lineman after the snap. (must be the straight left or right shifts over, they must stay down on the ground)
POST SNAP - So after you manually move a player pre-snap, you can't just change immediately after the ball is snapped, thats just like moving a guy than switching to a D-Lineman, if you move any player on defense pre-snap you must stay in control of him for the majority of the play, if you need to change to get after the QB or HB you can do that after the play developed, but until than you must stay controlling the player you manually moved pre-snap.
Mixing up your plays & routes
Yes we all know any play can be stopped, and any route can be countered, but there are allot of plays, or blitzes, or routes that are constantly taking advantage of the AI & we are here to play in a SIM fun league, not to have to try and stop somebody who's doing the same play or route (using same route in different plays) over and over.
- MIX UP YOUR PLAYS. You really shouldn't run a play [with the exception of runs up the middle] more than twice a game. Theres no reason for you not too, the playbooks are huge. THIS GOES FOR OFFENSE & DEFENSE
- Same route different play. You see it all the time, there always tends to be a couple of routes on a game that a WR or TE can run & he'll pretty much catch the ball every single time. Thats fine to run that route a few times, but when your constantly doing it 3rd down or over & over again its not fun, and is completely un-sim & unacceptable
No Huddle Offense
No huddle can only be used in the final 2 minutes of the 2nd or fourth quarter OR when trailing & must score quickly in the 4th quarter (when you can do this is relative to how many points you are behind by).
Play action
This is an open rule as of now & you can do it when you please as long as your being realistic, sim, and not taking advantage of the AI. The game covers this pretty well, but situations like 3rd & 4th and long are not the time for this to be used, it wouldn't happen in real life & shouldn't happen in the VNFL. (also, if your 3rd & 5 or more you shouldn't be doing it unless you've run the ball in that same situation multiple times already & it is a real threat)
Play clock
There is a 15 second drop off in our league, which sometimes will bring you out with only 9 seconds left as you move up to the line of scrimmage, but for the most part we don't want players to be running out the clock all the time, remember this is a game & we're playing it to have fun, please don't just run out the clock when you have the lead to try and secure a win, the only times its OK to intentionally run the clock down all the time all the way to 1 is during the final 2:30 of the 2nd & 4th quarter OR when you have a huge lead or are behind by allot & just want the game to get over with.
QB Running
You are not aloud to run the ball with the QB more than 3 MORE times than his average carries per game in his last season. (ex: in 2007 Romo ran 31x in 16 games. An average just under 2 carries per game. This means the most rushes he's allowed ever in a VNFL game is his avg (2) + (3) = 5. ) In the event of a number ending in a decimal round up if it is .5 or higher, round down if it is less than .5
- Make sure you know the most times your QB is aloud to run so that your not breaking this rule.
- Don't forget, if you have a QB who does scramble allot, he's probably got at least 1/4 of those runs via designed plays, and you should be doing the same using designed played to QB sneak, not just scrambling after the snap
- Its not acceptable to go more than 10 yards back when dropping back on a play, you never see this in the NFL, so we shouldn't see it here. I can understand if this does happen a couple times a game, but really keep an eye on it.
- DO NOT DROP BACK & LET YOUR RECEIVERS RUN DEEP, THAN JUST RUN WITH THE QB WHEN ALL DEFENSE IS DEEP DOWN FIELD, this is the oldest and cheapest QB play in the book for cheesers.
Sim Play
Virtual leagues are sim leagues. We want sim play at all times, whether its in the rules or not, if your doing something un-sim its not allowed. Sim means to play the game as if it were real life, not doing anything cheap or unrealistic that you wouldn't see in the real life game of the NFL. It also means not taking advantage of the AI, the game is based allot on computerized play, there are tons of ways to trick the computer or take advantage of it, we want to stay away from that & try and make the game as fair as possible.
