--NFC SOUTH PREVIEW--
2010 Recap
The NFC South was a competitive division which saw the Panthers, Saints, and Buccaneers win at least 1 division championship. The odd team out was the Falcons who often saw themselves at the bottom of the division. The Panthers, led by Morbid_Faith dominated the division over the first few seasons while LocDawg and the Saints dominated towards the latter part of VNFL 10 after coming over from the AFC South. The Bucs and Coolx did win a division title sometime around year 4 and consistently fought for a wildcard spot in the NFC.
2011 Preview
Redsoxnation moves on over to the NFC South and hopes to bring over his championship experience to the Carolina Panthers. In VNFL 10, resdsoxnation was the only owner/player to capture back to back championships beating the Cardinals and Saints in seasons 5 and 6. Last year, redsoxnation had a very talented and deep team in the Baltimore Ravens. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the Carolina Panthers. The does have some talent, namely RBs Williams and Steward, WR Smith, LB Beason and Davis, and CB Gamble and should be able to compete with the top teams in the league, especially with redsoxnation’s experience and competitive drive. However, this team will only go as far as its quarterback who are unproven but have a lot of potential. Rumors have it that QB Matt Moore has the inside track on the starting QB role, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to lead the Panthers to a championship run. The Panthers also have rookie QB Claussen, who many see as a future franchise QB, but doesn’t appear to be in the plans of redsoxnation, indicating that Claussen may be shopped to a QB starved team. I expect redsoxnation to turn this team into a perennial SB contender over the up coming seasons similar to how he transformed the Ravens. A third straight championship is definitely not out of the question.
JoeBush takes over the Atlanta Falcons after spending 6 miserable seasons in Cleveland where he was unable to make the playoffs. He takes over a very talented team that is set on multiple positions. QB Matt Ryan, RB Turner, WR White, and TE Gonzales make up a strong core of players on offense. On defense, DE Abrahma, MLB Lofton, CB Robinson, along with rookie LB Weatherspoon make up the defense. The team is young and is a player or two away from being an elite team. Joe Bush should be able to turn this team into a perennial playoff contender especially in a somewhat weaker NFC South. The Falcons and Panthers will likely challenge each other for the division crown with the Saints and Buccaneers expected to lag behind.
KRC, scorned by new Cowboys owner Ceegee takes his rage and anger to New Orleans to take over the Saints. The Cowboys weren’t the most competitive team in 2010, but did have some good games through out. The Saints are a very talented team with weapons abound on offense and capable defense. It is interesting to see whether KRC will be able to up his game and be able to compete with JoeBush and redsoxnation for the division title. The talent on the team, plus his motivation to up his game should result in KRC being much more competitive this year. However, there’s a chance that the Saints might end up being known again as the ‘Aints.
Massimo has his work cut out for him in taking over the Tampa Bay Bucs. 3rd overall rookie pick DT McCoy brings a lot of excitement to the team, but holes and question marks through out the roster will hamper Massimo from being competitive. QB Freeman appears to be a solid QB, but may not be a franchise QB. Questions at RB and WR will result in an inconsistent and stagnant offense and the team will have difficulties scoring points. The defense is in much better shape with players like DT McCoy, MLB Ruud, FS Jackson, and CB Talib; however, they may not be stout enough to make up for the short comings of the offense. Massimo, a new player in the league will be an unknown, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to motivate his team to a competitive level.
It’s hard to go against the Panthers when they have a 2 time VNFL champion in redsoxnation behind the headset, but the Falcons, and eventually the Saints should be able build competitive teams to challenge the reigning champ. But until that happens, we got expect the Panthers to win the division and potentially challenge for another title.
Win/Loss Predictions
Carolina Panthers: 12-4 (division winner)
Atlanta Falcons: 9-7
New Orleans Saints: 6-10
Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 5-11
Next: NFC North (August 8th)
