The Saints overcame the wrath of the playoff Gods as they beat the second NFC West team in a row to advance to the Super Bowl. Flashbacks to last year's loss to the Philadelphia 49ers in the playoffs haunted the Saints this year, as they had to line up against Gore and Willis in Green and White again in this year's playoffs.
Of all the NFC Playoff teams, coach LocDawg commented that he feared none more than the #6 seed, the 49ers. "They've got a fierce defense that will make you pay for any mistake. Their front 7 is the best we've seen."
The first drive started out with Saints QB Chad Henne throwing an interception. The 49ers cashed in with a diving TD catch by Crabtree to go up 7-0. Another interception and a punt got the ball back for the 49ers twice more, as each time they cashed in with FGs to go up 13-0.
Saints came up with a much needed big play, a 70yd touchdown pass to Miles Austin in the 2nd quarter made it 13-7, and the Saints seemed to be in position to cash in on a field goal right before half-time, but a mis-read in the coverage resulted in another 49er interception.
13-7 Niners, at half.
Down 20-10 in the 4th quarter, the Saints were moving the ball down the field. They got all the way down to the 4 yard line, but elected to kick the field goal on 4th down. 20-13. On the ensuing kickoff the 49ers returner fumbled the ball, but one of his teammates recovered. The Saints defense came up big forcing a punt with only a few minutes left in the game. With under 2 minutes left to go, on 3rd and 16, Chad Henne found Miles Austin again, this time for a 59 yard TD pass to tie the game!
20-20 End of Regulation OVERTIME
Saints won the toss and elected to receive. The Saints drove to the 49ers 44 yard line and were faced with a 4th and inches. They elected to try to win the game with a 61 yd field goal, which came up 5 yards short. The 49ers drove into field position and lined up to kick a 50yd ? FG to win the game... but the field goal was blocked!! What a huge play to turn the table in the NFC Championship game in overtime! The Saints drove down and kicked a 47 yrd field goal to win it 23-20.
Heck of a game lockdown.
