Its pretty obvious that the emergence of Bjoern (the bear) Mason has people believing to beat the Broncos you need to stop the Bear. I say not so fast, looking deeper into the statistics really shows why the Broncos are undefeated.
The two key offensive statistics are there 3rd down conversion rate of 59.68% (which leads league) and average yards per pass attempt of 12.84 yards per attempt (which also leads the league). The Broncos are by no means a passing team with 190 yards a game through the air and are in the middle of the pack as far as ranks go. Brady Quinn has been very efficent in fact he is 4th in QB efficency and by averaging 12.84 yards per attempt tells me that the Broncos are really a better passing team than running.
Granted the bear is a beast and creates a lot of short yardage situations and statistically has been great, however the real key to beating the Broncos is not let the efficency of the passing game set up the Bear. If you want to beat the Broncos you must do a great job of gameplanning and getting them off the field in third down situations.
Offense is only one third of the game tho, where the Broncos really shine is on D. Statistically they are top 5 in many areas and this has ultimately been the key to Spyder's success. They have a good turnover ratio but not great. The Broncos success is a total team effort, which each part feeding off the other. The Defense controls game and offense chews up yards and the clock. They are product of efficency from top to bottom.
If you want to beat the Broncos, you must get them off the field in third down situations and find a way to put points on the board vs his D.
TENNESSEE TITANS
Defensive Ranks
Total yards
Rush D- 55.89 yards/ per game League rank- 3rd
Pass D- 242.78 yards/per game League rank-28th
Total D- 298.67 yards/per game League rank- 16th
Middle of pack in other D categories and nothing really to use to draw conclusions.
Offensive Keys
CHRIS JOHNSON- 170 attempts 1612 yards 9.48 ypc 20 TD's
23 rec. 265 yards 3td's
(Easily MVP at this point, outside of Jay Cutler's 140 QB rating)
The Titans have 3287 yards on the season, Chris Johnson has 1877 yards of total offense which breaks down to 57% of Titans offense. That is pretty insane to say the least. Johnson has actually single handedly outgained two WHOLE VNFL teams on his own.
You may be asking yourself where is the other 43% of the offense coming from?
Kurt Warner with a QB rating of 125.33. Warner only has 129 attempts and has not hurt the offense whatsoever. Only throwing two ints is a HUGE key to the Titans when you factor in Johnson's guady numbers. Warner manages and Johnson delivers with the 23 TD's.
The Titans have been one of the worst teams in the league at takeaways but when your QB has only thrown 2 its not really a factor. The Titans are plus 6 in turnovers but it is mainly due to Johnon's big play ability and Warner managing everything in between.
If you havent figured out how to beat Titans you didnt pay attention, obviously this is not an easy task to beat the Titans. Hint...Hint...follow CJ!
Just wanted to take a look at what makes a team unbeaten to this point and as the statistics show there are different ways to success just like in the NFL. Based upon the statistics presented here the Broncos are well oiled machine and more equipped for a playoff run because of the amazing balance in all areas. Whereas the Titans are one wrong play a way from losing 57% of the offense and making some major adjustments. Granted Giovanni Girley is explosive but I dont think he is ready to put up Johnson like numbers. Good thing Locdawg went out and got an elite superbowl QB.
I just wanted to look at why these teams have been so good so I figured I would post my findings......
