Everyday from now until August 10th, I will be posting a division by division preview of VNFL 2011 Season 1. By the time the previews are done, it will be August 10th, just in time for Madden NFL 11!!!
NOTE: This is supposed to be for fun and I'm in no way trying to offend anyone. Of course this is my view of the upcoming season, but feel free to voice your opinions as well to make this a fun discussion.
--NFC EAST PREVIEW--
2010 Recap
The Philadelphia Eagles were the most consistent team in the division as they were always in the playoff hunt. The Redskins, who were led by 3 different owners (Morbid_Faith, JT211, and Antec21) captured multiple division titles and rivaled the Eagles. The arrival of Antec21 and consequently, winning the NFC East title in his first season was a surprise as many expected the Eagles to run away with the division. The New York Giants had a great start in the VNFL but faltered and fell down the competitive ladder as the VNFL progressed through multiple seasons. They became an average team at best, often finishing a couple of games under .500. The Dallas Cowboys, did not enjoy any success as they consistently finished in the NFC East basement.
2011 Preview
CeeGee, transformed the lowly St. Louis Rams from one of the worst teams into one of the best teams in the VNFL and in the process making a name for himself as one of the best coachers/players. Now CeeGee moves on to the NFC East to run the Dallas Cowboys and attempt to win the VNFL 11 season 1 championship. Considering the lack of talent in St. Louis, it’s scary to think what CeeGee can do with a roster that is as talented and dangerous as the Dallas Cowboys. Tony Romo will be a top QB in the VNFL and is armed with a trio of dangerous WRs in Austin, Bryant, and Williams plus an all-world TE in Witten. The 2 headed running back monster of Felix Jones and Marion Barber will provide balance to this team and give opposing defensive coordinators nightmares. The defense is also top notch with DT Ratliff clogging the middle and having a monster in ROLB Ware reeking havoc on opposing QBs. The combination of top tier talent and great coaching will result in the Cowboys finally reaching their potential, something they weren’t able to accomplish in VNFL 10.
The Eagles were competitive and were a lock for at least 10 wins each season. That may not be the case this year as the NFC has gotten stronger as a conference (you can thank the ex-AFC East owners for this and the NFC East has also gotten more competitive. The addition of CeeGee as the Cowboy’s owner/coach wills amp up the Eagles/Cowboys rivalry to a new level. The Eagles who were often picked as the favorite in the NFC East might have to play second fiddle to the Cowboys, and we know that won’t go over easy in the city of brotherly love. The Eagles have gone to a youth movement that sees QB Kolb and RB McCoy in the backfield instead of the familiar McNabb and Westbrook. How this change will impact the overall competitiveness of the Eagles remains unseen, but initially, one cannot say that the Eagles are better off when compared to the start of VNFL 10. The emergence of WR Jackson should be exciting for Eagles fans, but having Kolb under center might suppress Jackson’s progression and development. On defense, the defensive line is stout and the secondary is experienced and solid. The defense should be able to make up for the inconsistencies from the offense, but the growing pains of having a young QB, RB, and WR might set back the Eagles for at least this season.
Once upon a time, Coach Fry and the NY Giants won the NFC East. Then something happened and they sunk to the bottom of the NFC East where they resided for the rest of VNFL 10. Fast forward to the 2011 season and Coach Fry is looking to rebound and reclaim the success the Giants once achieved. The good news is that the Giants are loaded with talent on offense and defense. The bad news is so are the Eagles and Cowboys. The biggest question is whether Coach Fry can get his players playing at an elite level. The Giants are expected to be competitive and should improve over multiple season, but unfortunately, I don’t see enough competitiveness to seriously challenge the Eagles or Cowboys atop the NFC East in season 1.
Expertise, a new addition to the VNFL and the NFC East steps in as the Redskins owner and should have an instant rivalry with the Eagles. Donovan McNabb, the face of the Eagles for nearly 10 years is now the starting QB of the Redskins and looks to leap frog the Cowboys, and in particular, the Eagles in the standings. This might be a difficult task as the Eagles and Cowboys are both experienced and talented teams. The Redskins are talented on defense, with playmakers like DT Haynesworth, MLB Fletcher, LOLB Orakpo, and SS Landry; however, question marks at running back (old and slow), and WR (is there a #1 WR on the roster) will hold this team back. Expertise would need to step up and show that he has the skills to hang with the NFC East big guns before we can comfortably place the Redskins among the middle tier teams. Until we see what the Redskins can do on the field, they’ll be relegated to the NFC East basement, within arms reach of the Giants.
The Cowboys and Eagles are expected to go to war with each other in trying to capture the NFC East title. The loser of that war would still likely claim a wildcard spot and challenge in the playoff tournament. The Giants and Redskins look to be a season or two from being able to challenge for the NFC East title, but will likely suffer in the standing based on a tough division. I expect the Cowboys to win the division, and see CeeGee dominate with a more talented roster.
Win/Loss Predictions
Dallas Cowboys: 13-3 (division winner)
Philadelphia Eagles: 10-6 (wildcard)
New York Giants: 5-11
Washington Redskins: 4-12
Next: NFC West (August 4th)
