Your not reading this wrong, after a huge surprising upset when the NYJ beat Pit at home 42-10 and move onto the superbowl!
GAME PREVIEW
The Jets were the better team in the regular season with a 13-3 record, but ended up only earning a wildcard position going into the playoffs giving him the longest path possible to the finals. In those said playoffs they've beat the fellow 13-3 Titans in a nail biter 25-24, they than beat fellow division rivals & division winner New England Patriots and won 37-31. Than in the conference finals nobody gave them a shot at beating the 12-2 Steelers at home by a wopping 42-10 score. These Jets have only improved in each round of these playoffs, and have had more and more impressive victories each time.
But this time the Jets are facing a fellow cinderella story in the Carolina Panthers. Winning the worste divisioin in football with an 8-8 record is far less than impressive, in round 1 they had to play their wildcard game against the 11-5 GB Packers, they won that one in a real thriller by a FG. They'd go on to beat the highly touted Rams 34-27, and once again just like their foe the Jets continued rolling & improving as the playoffs go on, they went into Philadelphia and beat them impressively 37-13.
Clearly both these teams are coming into their own right now, playing the best football they've played all season long, and are just on roll's. Obviously the Jets will be the leader on the money lines because of a much more improved regular season record, also because of the impressive victory over Pittsburgh, and the fact that their representing the AFC which many critics have been saying all year that the NFC champion wouldn't have a shot in these finals, and that the AFC is the much better conference; and the #'s do back those facts up. So can Carolina continue their cinderella story, can an 8-8 team win the superbowl? I can't remember the last time that's happened, but the way Carolina is playing the feat doesn't seem all that impossible at this point.
PLAYER BREAKDOWN: It looks like Delhomme has recovered from his injury & will be the starter in the superbowl, but is that injury ailing? we'll find out. The Jets come into this game with no injuries as well. This clearly has played a part in both these teams success as allot of teams in the VNFL have been taunted by some key injuries.
QB's: Sanchez is clearly the better of the 2, the #'s clearly back that up. Sanchez may be an all pro player in his rookie season, and hasn't really had any rookie jitters to this point, but will they begin now? He's gone the furthest a rookie QB has ever gone into the playoffs, but no rookie QB has ever lead their team to the superbowl. Delhomme has had an up & down season with no real consistancy, the Panthers really will be relying on him to just bring great veteran leadership to the game & make the smart & safe pass when needed because the Panthers run game is a weapon like no other, the passing game just needs to help get out of a jam now and than, unless Carolina gets behind, at which point Panthers fans will be gritting their teeth on ever Delhomme pass.
Running Back's: Williams will most likely go to the probowl, and has been the leader of the Panthers all playoffs long, his relentless style, he can do everything, he has power, he has speed, hes agile and hes one of the most rounded backs in the VNFL, Carolinas success will hinge on this guy having a good game & being able to keep the run game going all game long. Washington for the Jets has been impressive when getting the call, he just hasn't gotten that call all that much, the Jets rely on the passing game to get the yards, but don't forget about Washington, after being named starter at the start of the season he has proven his worth; this guy can bust the big one on any given play & if the Panthers get caught they could be watching this speedster dash to the outside and break a big one.
Receivers: In only his 2nd year TE Dustin Keller is the leader of this NYJ passing attack, Keller & Sanchez quickly developed an undeniable chemistry as Keller has been the best tight end in the VNFL all season long. But this Jets passing attack is very well rounded, they spread the ball well to receivers stuckey, Robiskie, and Cotchery; Washington is also a threat out of the backfield. The Panthers have a less balanced attack but 2 superstars at the head, Steve Smith has had a phenominal season & has more than continued that on into the playoffs being a real leader on this team. If Smiths not open the Panthers are constantly looking for Williams out of the backfield, a very versatile back he'll kill you with the run & the pass if you don't have an eye on him.
DEFENSE: The Jets in the season just had a much better defensive team, but Carolina has really come into its own in the playoffs & have proven they can shut down the best of the best of them at crunch time. The Panthers are lead by can't miss tackler Jon "THE BEAST" Beason at MLB he is a great tackler but can also cover well. His partner in crime Thomas Davis at OLB has had a phenominal season as well & these 2 cover the field extremely well & can do it all. Safety Charles Godfrey has had a great playoffs really stepping up for the DB team & making some huge plays, he was no slouch all season long & is not somebody you want to test deep, Gamble should be covering the Jets top receiver, he's been the teams best CB all season long on this defense that has great players at all positions. Brown & Peppers have been a great tag team at DE both showing the ability to get to the QB, but the OLB Davis is their best sack threat. Ellis is undoubtedly the big sack threat for the Jets with more than double the 2nd best on the Jets roster. Look for a combined effort by the Jets defense on getting to the ball, players like Scott will play a pivitol roll if the Jets plan on winning the superbowl, he will most likely be shadowing Williams all game long & it will be his job to cut off the angles, don't allow the big gain, and make a ton of tackles on the day. He'll have help from Kerry Rhodes & Darrelle Revis is a great all around CB who will not miss many tackles. Strong Safety Leonhard, and CB Revis are the leaders against the pass each with 7 pic's on the season and 4 pick 6's, this team when they get the ball really look to bring it back to the house every time, they've had 10 returns for TD's in the regular season, so they have put points on the board more than every 2nd game, if delhomme makes that mistake hes been known to make all season long, look for the Jets to really capitolize on it themselves. Rhodes & Sheppard round out this great Jets secondary that is great against the pass, but the real question on the day is, can the Jets shut down the run & force that said pass, than capitolize.
After breaking this game down both teams have real great threats, clearly the Panthers need to have success running, and the Jets need to be well balanced, if Sanchez struggles or Williams struggles that could be the cause for their teams defeat, I really don't know who to call in this game but the #'s do point in the Jets favor. I do believe however the Jets defense is more built to handle the run, and that could be all it takes for a Panthers offense to have a huge day & take home the big prize. I'm not going to predict this one, you can all be the critics. All questions will be answered in the first VNFL superbowl, I can't wait to see it!
